safetytips

It seems to us that motorists are taking a bit more notice of us all. Maybe because there are so many of us out there - safety in numbers we say. However there are several things you can do to help protect yourself.
We asked our cyclists what were their top 10 safety tips for cycling in London traffic.

# 1 NEVER undertake a bus or lorry and watch out for them turning.

# 2 DO wear a helmet –
If you need convincing see this appeal from James Cracknell

# 3 Do NOT wear headphones.
You need to be aware of everything around you, any distraction will cut you off.

# 4 Go flouro
Be seen. Wear high Viz clothing it may not be cool but it could save your life.

# 5 ALWAYS take lights and use them at night

# 6 Cover your brakes
Ride with your hands in a position where you can brake at any time.

# 7 NEVER jump a red light at a cross road

# 8 Wear Gloves
If you are unlucky enough to be knocked off gloves or cycling mitts will minimise any scrapes.

# 9 Watch your road positioning at Traffic Lights
Be seen at traffic lights – position yourself in front of trucks.

# 10 Communicate with drivers
When pulling off, catch the eye of the driver along side you to be sure you have been seen.

If you would like some help gaining confidence there may be free cycling sessions available through your local council but if you want to get going sooner try out a one to one session with one of our specialist trainers.
